Extreme Winemaking, Elegant Wines – Spotlight on Nino Negri

By Nicole Eacuello

Nestled in the mountains along the Swiss boarder is the breathtaking region of Valtellina – a unique area born millions of years ago from the collision of the African and European tectonic plates. On the surface, Valtellina captivates explorers and wine enthusiasts with its beauty. The lasting impression, however, comes from the miracle of winemaking even being possible here…

The locals call it “viticultura eroica” (translating to extreme viticulture). Due to its rugged and steep slopes, grapes are grown within terraced & partially walled vineyards – up to 2,600 feet above sea level – and harvested exclusively by hand. The valley’s unique east-west positioning allows for southern exposures, key for grape ripening, but makes viticulture possible on just one side of the valley. The altitude can cause significant and quickly occurring temperature swings, but the large stones on the vineyard floor capture & retrain heat – warming the vines and protecting them from frost. Despite nature’s challenges, the winemakers of Valtellina have prevailed – one of which, is Nino Negri.

Since 1897, Nino Negri has been a pioneer in Valtellina, mastering the practice and art of mountain winemaking. The winery has its home in the 15th-century Castello Quadrio di Chiuro, and after almost 40 years under iconic winemaker Casimiro Maule, is today run by Danilo Drocco, a native of Alba (Cuneo) and a true Nebbiolo purist, who has led the winery to new heights in quality and international recognition.

Last month, I had the honor of visiting the historic winery and terraces of Nino Negri, learning from their team, and selecting five beautiful labels to feature in our store. Each label embodies the spirit and terroir of Valtellina – we are excited to share them with you and at a special price.
