Staff Pick Of The Week: Los Medanos Bonarda

Originating in Savoie, France, the Douce Noir varietal went on to make a splash in the wine world. Often referred to as Charbono, Corbeau, and most popularly, Bonarda, this dark + brooding red wine is not one to be overlooked. The grape is typically fruit-forward, showing notes of cherry and plum. One can also find more earthy notes as well, including all-spice, violet, and tobacco. It’s medium-bodied with high acidity, and low tannins/alcohol content. If you’re not a fan of oak, you’re in luck! Most Bonarda wines are made with little to no oak – allowing its most natural flavors to shine.

We are currently enjoying Los Medanos Bonarda. It comes from a small, family-run winery and is made with much love and care. A note from our Wine Director, Jennifer Chapman: Move over Malbec, Bonarda is the new red grape of Argentina! I tried this wine and immediately had to bring it in for you all to try. From Los Medanos, this wine has good intensity, red fruit flavors like strawberry and plum, with coffee, chocolate and French oak notes. Pairs well with Mediterranean dishes, grilled steak or mushroom risotto.

Not only is this wine delicious, it has phenomenal value, and is also one of our selections for this month’s 15 Under $15! We highly recommend!
