When you hear the word Lambrusco you may immediately think of the Lambrusco your grandparents drank. Take a pause before you immediately react because that’s not the Lambrusco we are referring to here.

Lambrusco is simply awesome! Hailing from northern Italy (what could be better), mostly from the area of Emilia Romagna, it is one of the oldest styles of wines made in Italy. Lambrusco is both the name of the grape varieties (yes there are more than one) and the name of the wine. Slightly sparkling, no two are alike, and aren’t we happy for this. That would be just boring.

Most Lambruscos are blends of different Lambrusco varieties. The most popular are Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Reggiano, Lambrusco Grasparossa and Lambrusco Salamino and these are the names you may see on the label. Lambrusco Montavano is the only one permitted to be produced in the Lombardy region.

Lambrusco has different styles, from beautifully bone-dry (secco) to slightly sweet (semi-secco). While some of the best Lambruscos are red, and in more recent years white and rose Lambruscos are being made by some producers with amazing quality. Lambrusco is typically made in a frizzante style, which is lightly sparkling.

Lambrusco also ranges in flavors from lighter style red fruits like raspberries and strawberries to richer dark fruits, like black cherry, plums, and blueberries. The alcohol content also can tell you a little about the wine. Lower alcohol content, like less than 11%, will be slightly sweeter.

Any style Lambrusco is amazing with cheeses from that same area like Parmigiano Reggiano as well as Prosciutto drizzled with balsamic vinegar from Modena. Charcuterie with Italian crusty bread is the best. And chocolate is best with sweeter style Lambruscos like the Lambrusco Reggiano.
