We always struggle with the question “where do you want to go for dinner?” because of all the great restaurants, specifically in our home town of East Greenwich and one of our favorite destinations, Narragansett. Hopefully this issue of SO Rhode Island, focusing on the new dining scene in these cool towns by the water, will help you make some decisions on where to experience your next culinary delight.
One thing we do not struggle with is what to drink with dinner – wine. As owners of The Savory Grape Wine Shop in East Greenwich, we have the enviable job of continuously trying to find the best wines available for our customers. It’s a tough job but we absolutely love doing it!
Wine consumption in the US has doubled in the last ten years, just recently surpassing beer consumption. The level of sophistication also has increased with the average price paid for a bottle of wine rising from $11 to just under $15, adjusted for inflation. We can see first hand the thirst (pun intended) for wine knowledge by our customers everyday. They have discovered the joy of properly paired wine with food. They have realized there is more out there than just California Cabernets and Chardonnays and Aussie selections with labels donned with animals. The summer, whether going to one of the fabulous new restaurants or taking out to eat at home, is the perfect time to experiment with fabulous, yet lesser known wines – white wines such as Gruner Veltliner, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, and Vernaccia and reds such as Malbec, Carmenere, Pinotage, and Grenache.
SO the next time you are out in one of those great EG or Narragansett restaurants, check out the wine list, surprise your crowd and try a new wine. We hope to see you at the shop soon!
